In late 2021 I began the process of updating the UI for ELLKAY's flagship LKArchive software app. It is ELLKAY's most popular and successful program, and was the ideal place to start the process of visually updating and modernizing their software image. Below you will find all the progress I was able to make before I was poached by Frequency in early 2022.
The initial analysis revealed that LKArchive's UI, while functional, felt a bit dated. Users found it challenging to navigate through the system efficiently, and the lack of a visual dashboard made it harder for them to grasp key insights at a glance. Recognizing these pain points, we set out to modernize the interface and introduce a fresh, intuitive design. Even though it was web-based software, it was unresponsive, and impossible to use productively on an iPad, which had been a major feature request from users (mostly doctors).
My scope was to:
The first thing I did was consult with ELLKAY's sales and support teams, to get a sense of what the product needed to be, and what feedback we were getting from users about some of LKArchive's strengths and weaknesses. What became evident was the need for a more visually appealing and user-friendly interface, and a desire for a dashboard that could provide a snapshot of critical data.
With insights gathered from our internal teams and users, we defined three core design principles to guide our redesign process:
The first step was to declutter the interface. We reorganized menus and simplified navigation, ensuring that users could access the most frequently used features with minimal clicks. A cleaner layout reduced visual noise and improved the overall readability of the system.
Next, we introduced a visual dashboard, a central hub providing users with real-time insights into their data, while also adding data visualization such as charts and graphs for quick assessment of trends. This dashboard offered customizable widgets, allowing users to personalize their view based on their unique needs. Key metrics, trends, and alerts were displayed prominently, enabling users to quickly identify areas that required attention.
In conclusion, the journey of updating the UI of LKArchive was a collaborative effort driven by user feedback and design principles. By embracing simplicity, clarity, and visual appeal, we not only addressed existing pain points but also future-proofed the system for evolving user needs. It also gave ELLKAY a visual jumping off point for the UI modernization of the rest of its software libary.
The success of this project highlights the importance of user-centric design in creating software that not only meets but exceeds user expectations.
